I've officially reached my goal I set out for myself when I will see my family in 2 weeks. I've lost 2lbs this week for a total of 18.6 lbs. Also, I'm thrilled to say I'm officially a size 14.
Today, I wore a pair of linen pants to work that I haven't worn in 2 or 3 years along with a beautiful sweater Hayley bought for me. I felt and looked fantastic.

CALLING COLLEEN
We need to hear from you! The blog needs to know your status. And perhaps a comment on the following question: Given that calories are your friend -- the more the merrier -- how does it feel to know that, for you, fresh fruits and dried fruits and avocados and almonds and cashews and peanuts and peanut butter and dark chocolate and whole grain breads and whole grain pastas and and brown rice and wild rice and baked potatoes truly are unlimited?

REFLECTIONS ON THE WORD "UNLIMITED"
I just measured out a heaping cup of cut watermelon for myself. As I allowed the heap to swell, I remembered Kim talking about WW's "unlimited fruits," but then qualifying the meaning of "unlimited" later in an email to me. "Well, you don't want to eat unlimited fruits," she said. Oh, right, sure, of course not, I thought. How could I have thought "unlimited" meant unlimited? Kind of brings me back around to the "just be unlimitedly yourself" (pause) "well, maybe a lighter version." Maybe the un-unlimited version.
I guess it all boils down to a no-free-lunch, get-real kind of thing. Nonetheless, I have to utter a protest. Used with respect to food, the adjective "unlimited" raises one's hopes high only to have them dashed to the ground when the strict interpretation of the word becomes known. Unlimited cauliflower, unlimited brussel sprouts, unlimited turnips, unlimited lima beans, unlimited dandelion greens, unlimited radishes, unlimited roots of things...You catch my drift.
So my over-sized cupful of watermelon is a limited-unlimited-limited portion, if you know what I mean.

SILKY SMOOTH
In yoga this morning, the ultra-smooth feel of my skin under my hands during a pose kind of startled me. I thought to myself that I must have put body lotion on my legs after my shower. But no, on second-thought, I hadn't; I'd been in a hurry. So, here's my first report on my new shower water filter. Does it make a difference to my skin? Yes! And my scalp has pretty much stopped itching. Harder to tell what difference it might be making in the health of my hair -- because I'm experimenting with various conditioners and masks -- but my hair feels very soft and light. Showering and shampooing without chlorine feels so nice, so very nice. I highly recommend.

I ASK MYSELF
As returning to my slimmest self seems not a whole lot closer than a month ago -- in other words, as I experience this morning that standing-still feeling -- I ask myself whether all the fleeting moments of pleasure in cakes, pies, cookies, pints of frozen yogurt and bread, of course, were worth it. No! One puny minute of euphoria eating a cookie versus 1,940 ponderous minutes (a day's worth) of undereating to make up for that cookie? I don't think so. May I acquire a new habit -- the ability to think through the outcome of eating bags, boxes, and plates of sweets et al.
PS: About returning to my so-called slimmest self: I haven't consciously made that a goal, nor will I. It would be an outstanding outcome, but I know myself. I have to diet "easy." One 1,940-minute day at a time.
I'm starting to see strength-training in my future. Yes, great, I say to myself, but remember your intention to begin cardio workouts?

Still have time to hit the mark
140 this morning on my scale. Too tired to think about walking this morning. Hoping for a little later. We'll see the digital weigh in tonight at mom's. 3 more days till I get the tape measure out for the abs. I'm not too hopeful but full of hope if that makes sense. Today only from living richwith coupons just ordered Women's health Mag for the year (10 issues) $3.99. Perfect portions Ming is a product from perdue. You see I buy and slice my own chicken. Kim told me awhile ago about perfect portions. I bought them with a coupon last week anyway I think we determined they are actually 5 oz.. So, it's really more then a perfect portion for me with a lunch salad. Grilling Salmon steaks at mom's tonight. Have a great day all and choose the right portions.

SATURDAY MORNING AT TJ'S
Going to Trader Joe's for me now, as I just did, is a bit like driving by an old boyfriend's house and trying desperately not to look in the windows. I got out of TJ's alive, once again, but the usual suspects -- cinnamon coffee cake, etc -- are just off-stage, ready to pounce. To lessen their pull, I walk right past them down the aisles, looking neither to the right nor the left. My protective membrane still beats but it's a delicate thing.

6,000 steps at work
First, Congrats Camille into 40's, I can't seem to make the leap. And, Ming, I think that breast thing is so true. But, I seem to loose there first and the worst abs seem to linger. Still leaving me an apple. Moving in the right direction. Tomorrow, I am going to look for a dress for the party.( this is a task I do not enjoy) I am working on a salad thing. Tonight before work I had a salad with buffalo chicken (my version- no butter) on top of my salad with a light dressing. And, Kim, perfect portions are not perfect. You'd be proud, I cut it in half. But, I just finished it when I got home from work - 2 oz.. I hope to weigh lighter tomorrow but to be light in spirit is my goal as well. Col, I'm going to work on the blog thing in am and hope maybe we can hook up for coffee. Hope your drinking your smoothies too! Sweet and pleasant dreams. I know we're talking weight but LOVED the ending of the opening of the Olympics which I was fortunate to get to see.
THE LAST SHALL BE FIRST
& THE FIRST SHALL BE LAST
It is said by reputable sources that the first place you put on fat will generally be the last place it leaves. I don't know about you, blogmates, to whom I'm genetically tied, but fat's first go-to place in me is my breasts. Each morning and, to be completely honest, many times throughout the day now, I check to see how Breast A is doing, how close it is to again matching Breast B, the one that can't gain weight. It's very close now. We might make it by August 16. Then again, we might not. No worries, however. Ultimately, it will happen.

COMMENT TO CAMILLE
Last I heard, 30s come after 40s! Bravo!
How about an alternative image to "brick by brick," which suggests heavy, onerous effort? A lighter image perhaps? Such as: brick by ever-lighter brick. Or, imagine the body weight you aspire to as a horizon over the ocean; you're sailing toward it in a light sailboat; some days the water is choppy, other days smooth; some days the wind is dead calm, other days it fills the sails nicely, bringing you ever closer to where you want to get to. All that's required of you is to keep the boat pointed in the right direction.
Early morning thought from a sister intimate with heavy. . .

My family is benefiting
Well I seem to be at a bit of a stalemate. I'm working on that. The craziest thing is I have never cut up so much fruit in my life. Packaged products are more at a minimum in my house. And, the freezer looks a little bare of meat. But, it is nothing for example for my house to go through a lb of strawberries, a pint of blueberries, 2 large jersey tomatoes in a day. plus whatever else. I may have a bite or two of that but the cut of veg's seem to get more ignored. I ordered weight watcher magazine because it came through a one day sale at a website I use. I am hoping for receipe's. I would love salad everyday and mix it up like you are talking about. Don't laugh to hard Kim, that means another trip to the salad bar(grocery store) as I find it is more cost effective to buy a little at a high price and chop it up or the rest just goes bad. I like the idea of changing the name of our blog. We know it's possible. The focus should be that August is not the end. I did something to my watch and half to reset it. I am trying to do more walking at work. Just want you to know I'm here and I'm in just a little busy these last few days. But, I'm still in.
WHY GREEN TEA?
We all know green tea is supposed to be good for us. Without any thought of its health benefits, some months back I surprised myself by wanting green rather than my usual black morning tea. I've been drinking it ever since, really liking it, and have no idea how long this preference will last.
So I got curious about exactly what green tea contains that makes it so special. (I've never been very good at doing anything "blindly.")
I found out the following -- backed up by Harvard U Health Watch, which says "The proof about green tea is in":

I found out the following -- backed up by Harvard U Health Watch, which says "The proof about green tea is in":
- Green tea is the best food source of a group of plant-derived antioxidants called cathechins. "In test tubes, catechins are more powerful than vitamins C and E in halting oxidative damage to cells and have other disease-fighting properties." One study reported green tea as 200 times more potent an antioxidant than Vitamin E.
- Studies have found an association between drinking green tea and a reduced risk of several cancers, heart disease, and high blood pressure, as well as increasing HDL (good cholesterol), lowering LDL, and thus improving artery function.
- SPECIAL NOTE TO BLOGMATES: Clinical studies also suggest that green tea can boost metabolism and help burn fat. (From more than one source.)
- 2-3 cups a day is suggested.
- Loose-leaf green tea is more potent than tea bags.
- Green tea contains less caffeine than black tea. Black tea has far less caffeine than coffee.
PS: Other foods that provide potent antioxidants (catechins), although not as much as brewed green tea, are:
- Dark chocolate tops the list "if a pure Netherland source."
- Berries are your best nutrient-rich, calorie wise option, e.g., blueberries and blackberries. (The darker the berry, the more the antioxidants.)
- The skin of apples is third richest in catechins.
For today, I seem to be enjoying things that are good for me!

COMMENT TO KIM
The consequences of eating the same thing day in and day out? I know that one too well. And actually I wondered about the daily salad myself. For now, ever since Colleen's salads reminded me in May that a salad is more than lettuce, I've been relishing them, adding arugula, avocado, etc. But your warning is well-taken. Even switching up dressings and herbs can bring a whole new taste. I am now well-advised to bring some new salad possiblities into the house.
So, okay, beware of ruts.
Maybe when we all come together in May we can share strategies for avoiding this particular pitfall.

SALAD EVERYDAY
Is eating a salad every day too routine? Perhaps monotonus? It's so easy to fall into "routine traps" whereby you are on auto pilot. Be careful. Food as life, has to be interesting and satisfying.
Focus on shaking it up.
PS. This is a challenge for me. I leaned toward routine and monotonus.
PSS Found the spell check but it isn't giving me the solution on how to spell monotonus. UGH
PSSS As I walked my 4 miles tonight, I'm driven that now I want to be at 155 when I rejoin my family. You and this blog has given me the focus, strength, and support I have needed to take care of myself. Thank you for this!!!! I would never have done this on my own.
I feel so good and continue to think I'm 120 lbs and 30 years old. Nothing better.

THE SLIMS
Don't know about you, but our blog name no longer works for me. Too old hat. I propose an alternative: THE SLIMS. Want to toss a new name around at our August face-to-face rendezvous? Choosing a new name, of course, implies we're continuing on past the August 16 marker. Shall we toss that around too?
(I have an idea for our next challenge marker.)
As for me, since I last checked in. . .
Water throughout the day, every day P
No sweets, except for a one-time slip P
Salad everyday P
Adhering to 1-cup portions P
Oatmeal, absent sugar, every other day P
Enjoying summer fruits P
Eating no animals or animal products P
exception being occasional parmesan cheese &
dairy ingredients in my protein shakes
No overeating P
No Diet Coke P
Some times, or any time I foolishly test myself, it feels like only a thin membrane separates me from unmanageable cravings. Unmanageable cravings invariably lead, for me, to unmanageable eating. I credit our blog with sustaining the protective membrane.

I'M WALKING ON SUNSHINE & IT FEELS SO GOOD
Down 2 lbs for a total of 16.6 lbs. I will be officially at the goal that I set for myself next week ahead of plan. I will be thinking about my next SMART goal in the coming week which will be a 10lb reduction. I just have to figure out realistically how much time.

Love it!
Okay, report back. I love the watch for working out in the correct zone. I was starting my walk thought I was at a good speed- checked it and I was lo. It is not good as a pedometer. It took me 45 minutes to the top of the bridge and back to my house. My watch pedometer read 329 steps oops I see now my little walking figure isn't blinking which means I must have turned it off. My ipod pedometer read 5,313 steps. I'm going to leave the watch on for the rest of the day and see where it ends up. I find the technology incredible. Anyone ever have Pureh Tea? It's suppose to be better then green tea.
The teenager trap a new beware
Just about to take my first official walk with my new watch. I will report in on return. i pod is charging. My teenager had pizza last night at 1:30 in the morning. My sliver turned into 2 pcs. Totally not worth it. Going to walk strong. Till later.
Back from Delaware. I was still good. I have been the queen of good choices and portion control. Yet, my body is slow to respond. I'm still at 8 pounds lost. I am glad for that. I am JUST 1/2 lb. from going to the decade of 40's and just can't seem to get over that hump. But, I WILL. Have a good day, girls The sun is shining here at the shore, and Kim is at the shore as I speak.

Feeling great. I did put on a pair of work pants that I struggled with before and it was pretty easy. Just have to keep the faith and keep going. I have to say the "mindful eating from the beginning has probably been the biggest thing for me" just thinking what I put in my mouth and of course, how much. I finally got the watch. It is so cool. I can't believe I had to file a thing, and then the person how tough times are for them. But, the crazy thing was, it was a guys name and clearly a pink watch.
It was a long night but a good one. We are just weeks away from our second vacation. Can't wait. Have a great day!

I wish I had a magic wand for health and happiness
I wish I had a magic wand. Today, I take my own happiness in feeling lighter. Loaded with Ortho appointments but hoping to get a walk in. My own scale this morning 142. with clothes. That's still in the right direction. I can't remember what my original goal was. All I know is my overall goal is to continue to make better choices for the rest of my life. Have a great day all!

MISS ME?
I was going to title this post "The Devil Made Me Do It" but my sense of humor is temporarily out of order.
My French family left this morning after three days that were a huge amount of fun, including a free outdoor, relatively intimate concert with Moby, one of my favorite artist-musicians. I think he took not only me, but the entire audience, on a two-hour-long trip to bliss. We boogie boarded, ate Caribbean food at the restaurant that's on one end of my street, and walked the Venice promenade & Main Street. Christine and Alexandre shopped vintage stores. And Alexandre, Scott & I got some sunburn from staying at the beach way longer than planned.
So remember the sweets I bought for my guests? (You know where this is heading.) Saturday, no problem. Sunday, no problem. Monday day, no problem. Monday night, problem. I "went out" on the Mexican pastries I got from our local panaderia to give my friends a taste of south-of-the-border. Then that led to eating some chocolate truffles they'd brought for me. Then that led to. . .let's just say it gets worse.
And I have no idea how much, or how little, water I drank. I was so distracted, I forgot to use my daily water chart, a tool that actually works for me, helping to ensure I'm drinking all the water I "want" to. Yep, "wan't" to.
Suddenly this all strikes me as ridiculous. So I may have missed a few glasses of water. I mean, come on, who cares, move on.
To be sure, overeating the sweets like I did has gotten me down. But, actually, I don't feel like Pandora's box has been flung wide open as a result. That may just be a bit of a miracle.
My home is sugar- and devil-free again.
Love,
M
PS: Easily stayed true to eating no animal products. No Diet Coke. And thinking about it now, I had no bread either, whole grain or otherwise. Bread wasn't even on my radar screen. Impossible. But true.

EMOTIONS
Emotions play a large role in my weight management challenges. As you can tell from my blog from yesterday, my tone wasn't that enthusiastic. Today, it's amazing. I tried on a suit that was a little tight 2 days ago, and guess what. Pants fit perfect and the Jacket is tight. Guess the walking is working. Looking forward to weighing in tomorrow and going for my power walk when I get home tonight.

Dear Sister Kim,
Your walks are enough. I can't wait till you get here and we can walk together. Just remember, you didn't measure before you started. Stay on the path with us because this blog is working for us. I am learning so much! As long as were moving in the right direction. Weigh in tonight on the digital scale. Wish me luck. The same or less! No Pizza! Salad!

MEASUREMENTS
Here goes and it's ugly:
Arms - 11
Bust - 40
Waist - 38
Hips - 43
Thighs - 25
I plan to remeasure at 5 lb weight loss intervals
Maybe my hour long sweaty walk isn't enough.

1. Ming, good luck, company was a little bit of a challenge for me. Use our mindful stuff but, be forgiving.
2. Bless me father thing, I actually did this. Bless me father it has been around 25 years since my last confession-in the box- in line with no one that didn't have grey hair, I think I made his day, He said Why?, I said maybe we can talk about that at some later time. In fact, in was Monsignor (sp?). He gave me absolution and my guess we called it penance. I'm not going to give you my confession. But, really, that's all, I'm forgiven. It didn't last that long and I was beaten myself up for years for my poor choices. I can't even explain all that part. I guess I just have to let go of my own guilt or whatever it is. It can be funny but also amazing! I think about it from time to time. Just like that really?
3. Klipples was the name of the bakery. It was such a awkward name I thought I had to be wrong. So much for trusting myself. Mom confirmed it today.
4. Kim you are being an inspiration and I can't believe you are walking that far. So, we are going to have some great walks together and I am psyched.
You can see it's late by all standards. Adelaide is in town and I can't wait to see her. Her mom and dad too of course. But, nothing like a baby soon to be toddler.
Have a great day!

AMUSEMENT & MOTIVATION
So glad I'm providing entertainment and motivation to my sisters. Just got back from my 1 hour (4 mile) power walk.
I have foregone my day at the beach today as I have quite a bit to do here at home.

THE DEVIL'S IN MY PANTRY!
Arriving around midnight tonight, by car from Yosemite, are my friends from France -- Scott, his wife Christina, and Scott's son Alexandre. (Mathieu, my godson, couldn't come because he's travelling from farm to farm for a few months around Europe on an international program on organic farming.) So they're arriving in a few hours. I went to TJ's today to get provisions: fruit and greens and. . .TJ's Cinnamon Coffee Cake for breakfast tomorrow morning, a box of Cookie Thins Triple Ginger for whenever, another box of Cookie Thins Toasted Coconut, a jumbo bag of Organic Blue Corn Tortilla Chips, and Multigrain & Flaxseed Water Crackers. Currently, these non-fruits and non-greens are resting on the top shelf of my pantry. The devil's in my pantry!

You guys have me so laughing. And, I do remember "just a lighter version of yourself". A true Kim-ism. Just had a beautiful dinner SALMON BROCCOLI RABE(fresh off the boat) and fresh zucchini. One SMALL glass of pinot grigio. I feel delicious. MINDFUL, everyone, MINDFUL. I'm glad you sisters are all out there. Lots of love.
ON FEELING LIGHTER
Instead of "packing it on," we're unpacking. So, of course, we feel lighter, because we are. Lighter in body and lighter in mind.
Apropos of heavy and light: Long ago, Kim was giving me advice over the phone about a date I was about to go on -- a rarety, I know. "Just be yourself," she said. A beat of silence followed after which she added, "Well, maybe a lighter version."

KIM: YOU MAKE ME LAUGH
Yes, how could you get to be 55 and fail to realize that your serrated knife could slice your "fleshy" tomatoes and cucumbers "thin to perfection"?
Try this: how could I get to be 65 and use as my primary knife a single-edge serrated giveaway from Shell Oil, or some such gas station, from nearly 30 years ago?
Slicing fleshy fruits and vegetables in the morning
-- once again, impressive. You make it sound so fun and yummy and even intimate -- "my" fruits and vegetables. Maybe when you picked careers, you were on your way down the alphabetical list to Advertising but got stuck at Accounting by mistake?

WHAT IS A SERRATED KNIFE FOR?
How can I be 55 years old think the only purpose for a serated knife was to slice bread? So, I eat Compari tomatoes regularly now and everytime and go to slice them thinly, it's a chore and I think boy my knives really suck. Just can't win.
I recently read an article that stated you should use a serated knife when slicing fleshy fruits and vegetables.
Alas, I sliced my tomotatoes and cucumbers this AM and absolute thin to perfection.
Did you all know this?

My dear sister Kim, I have learned to compare yourself to yourself. You are doing so great. I get joy from your achievements. And, you are motivating me. I too feel somewhat lighter although I don't know if it's just my mental mind or what. And if you all get AARP mag which I love and adore, there's such a great article about the belly weight. It's so important we do this for our health. The funny thing is the truth is the truth. I am not embarressed. It just happens and you don't even realize it.Or we do, but put ourselves on the bottom of the list of things to do. I love our blog. I love seeing something and go yeah I need to do something. Whether it's reminding me to be aware of my portions or gets me to take a walk. I am so grateful we teamed up. Good idea Ming for the blog!!!
TAKE THE PLUNGE
Girls - I will do the deed before Sunday and you all can too. You can compare yourself to me as we know my measurements will surpass everyone.
On a happy note, I feel so good and continue to feel I'm 120 lbs. I dropped 1 lb since yesterday. The body is so funny.

ARMS, BUST, HIPS, THIGHS TOO?
And Kim's concern is about whether she can read the measurements, not the measurement results themselves? All I can say is -- impressive. That's a mega-dose of reality I'm not yet, and may never be, ready for. The fit of my pants (alas, not jeans) remains my scale and measuring tape.

MEASUREMENTS
Count me in baby. Thank you Leslie for the blog! I know I need to measure arms, bust, waist, hips, thighs. I haven't done it becasue I KNOW I'm going to have trouble reading the tape. Hayley said she would help me, yet, I really hesitate. How gross!!!
Day 41? I think. 142 lbs. on my scale this morning. whoo hoo. More importantly then that though, I think I slept a pretty solid 6 hours. I read an interesting article in O magazine. It had a chart of things that were unhealthy. Lack of sleep is pretty much at the top. For almonds, I recently tried Emerald,s cocoa almonds. Of course, I thought they were a really healthy choice. Very interesting. Today, I get out the measuring tape for the waist. Have a great day!

BACK TO KIM
Hey, thanks for looking that up for me. (I think the old WW system calculated 5 points for 23 almonds, so on that basis my 44-almond packets doubled in points to make 10.) What I didn't say in my last blog was that before TJ came out with the "handful" packets, I bought the only other option which was a whole bag and, as I've said, I tend to have few boundaries when it comes to bags-full of things.
For the moment anyway, I so like getting right-sized about the amounts I eat. My primary interest is eating nutrient-dense foods; a close second is learning moderation. Counting almonds and other nuts -- I can do that.
Love, M

ALMONDS
Ming - Your'e almonds are worth 6 points given the breakdown you provded. It seems like a lot for a small qty of food. Clearly two packs is too many. Like anything, shake it up.
I buy my almonds by the can (blue diamond) and I just count out 12 and put into a container or ziploc snack bag so I have it with me. I generally use the almonds as a snack (mid am) or (mid pm) to give me a boost and curb my appetite.

Trader Joe's "Just a Handful of Dry Roasted Unsalted Almonds" (1 bag contains 13 packets)
Nutrition Facts per packet
Total Fat 16 g
Total Carb 9 g
Total Fiber 4 g
Total Protein 9 g
Each packet contains 44 almonds.
Just now I looked at the calories too, which I've never done before: 210 calories per packet. Oh my. And to think it's not unusual for me to eat two packets, one right after the other. And to think I'm in the habit, when I can't think of anything else healthy to eat, of eating bowls, yes bowls, of dry-roasted unsalted peanuts.
The value of splitting up the almond packets is quite clear to me now. Sounds like you've settled on the number 12. The South Beach Diet suggests 15. Somewhere online I read that Weight Watchers values 23 almonds at 5 points.
So, Kim, have you found a container system that you like for your almond allotments?
ALMONDS ARE PROVING TO BE AN EXCELLENT CASE STUDY IN GETTING REAL ABOUT PORTIONS FOR ME.

The WW message for the week is to love and encourage yourself and use positive self-talk. Don't beat youself up. Be your own best friend.

THE LAST TIME I'M GOING TO TALK ABOUT ALMONDS--PROMISE, CROSS MY HEART
I
know I’ve blogged about almonds before, but
they continue to educate me about portions. (For me, “portions” is a dull, grim word, which makes me think of diet police and strict, unpleasant rules and no-no's. Must try to think of a kinder, gentler
word.)
So, as you know I’ve been poking my nose into WW’s
point system, with Kim’s help. Yesterday,
I did my first daily eating tally.
Almonds — the one very small
packet I had as a snack — comprised over
1/3 of my daily points
allotment. As it turns out, almonds are not the miniscule snack I’ve heretofore
considered them to be. A handful of almonds, which is what I've been eating just about every day, is a humongous snack if you’re looking to
lose weight. These tiny
nuts gobble up a full 10 WW points that I could be using to eat bigger things. (How’s that for refined
thinking?)
Looking on the positive side, which as you all know I'm very good at doing, all I have to do is forgo
that daily handful--which is gone in an
eating flash anyway. As a result, I'll will have 10 more points to play with in a single day. My choices can expand -- within limits, of course.
If I were to write an essay called “My 2012
Summer of Dieting,” no subtitle would be more apt than “My Reluctant Encounter
With Reality.”
PS: Lest I mislead, I am not officially following the WW program. But it has given me "boundaries" I didn't really have before. With respect to WW, I guess you could say I'm "auditing."

BREAKING NEWS:
Migraine Sufferer Discovers Unconventional Treatment
OCEAN
CITY
— Camille Nickles, long plagued
by crippling migraine
headaches, found an unexpected remedy yesterday in this small New Jersey beach town, home of OCHC wrestling coach and Ocean City native, Bill Nickles, the proud husband of our story’s star. Yesterday, Mrs. Nickles sensed one of her Nor’easter headaches coming on, heading straight for her residence at 55 Asbury Avenue. Her house lay directly in the storm’s path. In fact, the usually calm, former high school teacher felt certain it would make its way up the front steps and explode through the front door.
Quickly, she dispatched to the store her also-calm twentysomething
Quickly, she dispatched to the store her also-calm twentysomething
daughter Kirsten, our story’s other scintillating heroine. As Mrs. Nickles revealed to us later, in the face of impending doom she had been struck with inspiration.
“Daughter dearest, I need you to drive your black Honda Civic, the one just like your Aunt Mignon’s, to Wawa." Wawa is a word passed down from the island's original inhabitants. "Pick up these
two things," Mrs. Nickles continued. She described possessing a powerful certainty about the instructions she was about to impart to her concerned daughter. "Get me a giant cold Coke and a
bag of Cheetos, any size will do.
Please hurry.”
And the rest is history. This writer has no doubt that migraine sufferers from near, far and wide will seek out Mrs. Nickles’ counsel each and every day for the rest of her life.
Mrs. Nickles declined to comment on her reaction to this honor. She also
declined to reveal her weight, as did her husband.
ERRATA: We apologize for two errors: It was McDonalds not Wawa. It was a bowl not a bag of Cheetos. We applaud Mrs. Nickles on the bowl vs. bag.

COMMENT TO LESLIE ON ITCHY SKIN
I know what itchy skin is--severe eczema showed up when I was 6 months old. After that, Mom had to drive me up to Buffalo regularly to get some kind of light treatment. The dermatologists essentially said I'd grow out of it soon. Soon turned out to be 29 years later, when I was in graduate school at Stanford and took matters into my own hands. Eczema comes only occasionally now. I say all this to qualify as an experienced itcher. Tootsie used to complain that I kept her up at night scratching.
Reading your blog just now I had a thought I'll toss out. Recently, I've been itching again, a little eczema but mostly my overall body skin and especially my scalp. This is largely why I just installed a chlorine water filter in my shower. (My latest hair stylist was the first person to enlighten me about chlorine damage to the skin and hair; she highly recommends all her clients purchase shower filters.)
In addition to whatever remedies a doctor might suggest, you might want to look into whether clorine and the other residual contaminants in almost all drinking water in America -- even in Ocean City's water -- could be exacerbating the problem. When I was investigating this myself, I read untold numbers of consumer reviews saying that, among other things, their scalp and skin stopped itching after installing the filter.
Give a call if you want to know more. Bravo on the 5 lbs!

I think I can officially say I am down 5 lbs. I did walk today. I'm anxiously awaiting my heart rate montior and will do some weights at some point today. But, I am heading out to find the components for a suggested spray for my psorasis. Really hoping it helps the itching. All I can think of is Aunt Midgie and how her hands would itch.
SLIPS & SETBACKS
I had a fabulous day at the beach yesterday, walked for an hour, did everything right. I came home showered, and tried on lots of clothes that were still way too tight. So disappointed. So what did I do. Lost total control. -- I drank way too much wine and lose resolve, ate melba crackers (excessive) with salsa, ate popcorn, and ate 2 WW ice cream. I did all of this instead of making myself a wonderful dinner. AND THE RESULT ... I am .2 lbs more today than yesterday and I should have seen it nice drop due to my exercising efforts. I could kick myself and am feeling remorseful.
So I begin today as a new day and hope after I walk tonight that I will be back to where I was.
So I begin today as a new day and hope after I walk tonight that I will be back to where I was.
So--my confession. Last night, around 8, I started developing a scary headache (like, oh no, a migraine?). So, my darlin', Kirsten, wonderfully went to McD's to get me a full-bore fountain Coke. That, along with a bowl of Cheetos, brought me out of the spin. I was so thankful but, yes, for this I paid. I am 1 pound UP this AM. But--okay. I'd rather have that than the headache. I wonder if I just HAD to have sugar???????
Today is a new day. Will's surgery is this AM, so looking forward to getting that behind him. Drink up, everyone. Water, that is, not Coke!

COMMENT TO COLLEEN
What grabbed my attention in reading the Comments section located below the article you sent was the possible loss of electrolytes from drinking too much water. When my exercise used to be so intense it produced rivers of sweat, I used to wonder about electrolyte loss. When Trader Joe's starting carrying Smartwater, which contains electrolytes, I would buy bottles of it from time to time. Now that I have foresworn plastic bottles of water, the article you sent nudged me to look into electrolytes online. The article linked below essentially says that if you eat whole foods, you're getting all the electrolytes you need. When I start cardio -- haven't yet -- and the sweat starts pouring again, I'll take another look into electrolytes. Thanks for sending.

Colleen - really interesting article. Too much? It doesn't make me feel so bad when after the morning of probably 16 oz. I now leave a empty glass next to the sink. If I get to target I'm going to check out the thing Kim mentioned earlier. The rest just may or may not happen or comes from other things. I definitely am still a forced drinker(down it). Another goal is to become a sipper. But, I must say in this hot weather I am finding it nourishing, almost.
I'm not doing any cup measuring. And, I keep my Ziploc and Tupperware till I generally end up giving something away. But, EBay has some great prices on pampered chef stuff. I emailed you guys, I got a great win on this heart rate monitor. It should give you an idea of the best range to be in when exerting(sp?). For me this will be for walking. You all can try it out in August if you want.
I should have lost 5 lbs. just at work tonight. Have a great day tomorrow!

You are too right. I just looked at Pampered Chef's 8-oz bowls and they look great. Didn't see those when I was Googling. About the Ziplocs. I've never bought these. Are you referring to their plastic disposable containers? Do they have specific 8-oz sizes? How often do you use yours before tossing?

IDEAL VACATION WITH LESLIE
Dearest Leslie,
Ingredients for a perfect vacation ......
First and foremost just being together
Other in no special order:
Laughter
Drinking
Activity
Lounging at pool and/or beach
Nightife
Great seafood
I AM UP FOR ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING. JUST SO HAPPY WE HAVE A PLAN TO ESCAPE AND I THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT HAPPEN.
PS. You can shoot me. I know we are going somewhere in Florida. Not exactly sure where. Sounds like as usual I need to catch up.

MEASURING CUPS
I think ZIPLOC has cornered the market on the lightweight (albeit plastic) 1 cup and 2 cup measuring cups. They are so perfect I don't know how you could PERFECT it unless it was made out of something other than plastic.
My perfect 1 cup and 2 cup measuirng cups (glass with plastic lides) are what I have from Pampered Chef which I use for food preparation and I love them.
Anyway, do you really care what the measuring cups look like? It's a functional item.

I did my 10 minute weight/exercise workout. I am going to move these to 3 times a day. But, a little concerned about doing too much on a Saturday. And, thanks Col, I started with 3 lbs and would love to borrow your 5's. I know the wt. has to be enough to fatigue my muscles. I'm going to get my wii fit back out and use the boxing and yoga in particular. Maybe some Zumba too! Going to work on a schedule on my day off tommorrow. And, Monday I'm going for a massage - have never done this alone and only with a group once. I have a gift certificate from my birthday in March. Also, going on ebay now to see if I can find a heart rate monitor at a good price. I'm also getting more infor on this skin problem.
What I know I've learned so far: reducing mindless eating and being aware of it. The 2nd is filling
that time with something more worthwhile.
Wt. loss - calories in vs. calories out
I have to start approaching food as fuel. How much you put in your tank-how much you burn = How much you lose
Portion distortion is the underlying reason for my weight gain and lack of exercise. The best diet for me will be moderation, smaller portions and real food.
And if I slip, I need to go back to making healthy choices right away. Stay positive and keep moving
forward.
I've got a grasp on all of the above. Now it's time for me to "MOVE MY BODY"
Kim I was thinking about our upcoming vacation. How about snorkeling at John Pennecamp? Walks through Key Largo - Main idea lets find someplace where we can exercise and move our bodies everyday :)

On using weights Leslie, I would use the hand held weights that you have. Some would suggest you begin with 2 then move to 5. But you're pretty strong so I would think 5. If you want to go up from there afterI sometime, I have 8s. I also have a set of walking weights which you're welcome to have. If you need a routine, I have some. Namaste.

Just home from work and it's early 11 pm. See, you can't work 5 hours and not eat when you get home. Not a crumb because there's not time on the job. So, I just had a little snack of my hot peppers and low fat feta crumbles. I did mean the kettle things Ming. I thought they were some type of replacement for the regular hand weights which I of course have and haven't used in awhile.
at Marshall's today (5 lbs.) was tempted but it was just one for $10. and I would think you need 2? It's so hot here and I thought the restaurant was hot or maybe I was just having hot flashes. Kim my thinking before drinking has gone out the window. As, I am enjoying my glass of wine with my peppers and cheese. But, I should be in bed by 11:30 and just bought my new eye shades. Funny enough, they came with ear plugs which have never really worked for me but I'm going to give it a try. Metamucil Ming because I don't get enough fiber and it is known to lower cholesterol. I'm on the cusp of high. But, with this new initiative to a life style change and the different choices in my home stocking maybe it will change too. For now, I also take it as my first big glass of water of the day. Just don't give up anyone. If anything we all know knowledge is power and we are learning so much everyday we try to improve our health and well being. Hope you all had pleasant dreams. Have a great day tomorrow.! PS. PS. I thought you'd never write! About the weights, do you mean kettle bells? If so, I've only watched people using them with their personal trainers outside my apartment building and on the beach. My impression: one should first build up to using them, especially if you want to protect your back from heavy lifting until you're ready. About daily Metamucil: Why?

Anyone have an opinion or know the difference between using hand weights and those new ball things I'm seeing everywhere? I forget what they r called but the handle seems to be at the top and the weight is underneath. Kim, I just recently read the 1 hour breakfast thing as well. I'm on day 2 of trying. Metumucil (1st large glass of water- been doing this for 3 months), something to eat. I was open for business the first day but did not shop. This second day is a little easier. Maybe try a hard boiled egg for breakfast for the protein. After 8 is a BIG Problem because of the shift work. But, that goal is somewhere in this equation for me as well. Staying cool in the heat wave. Have a great day all!
METABOLISM
Just starting to learn more about revving up the metabolism and looking at Dr. Oz's site. Two basic things that are easy to implement ..........................
Eat breakfast within 1 hour of waking up and include protein. I'm have my WW shake with 1 cup of fat free milk.
His site also suggested the following:
Breakfast between 6-8
Snack @10
Lunch between 12 - 2
Snack @4
Dinner between 6-8
Don't eat anything after 8 PM
I'm going give this a whirl. Also, good to have protein at the main meals.

DUH
How could I have forgotten the most fundamental principle of losing weight? Undereating! It hit me as I counted the almonds in the little packets I buy from Trader Joe's, one of my years-long portion control tricks. Weight Watchers assigns 5 points to 23 almonds. My "handful of almonds" packets contain 44 almonds, which equate to 10 points--nearly half of my entire days allotment by WW's standards! What? I think of those "handfuls" of almonds as healthy and practically calorie-less. They're a mere whisper in my day. Sometimes I even have two of those whispers, with barely a thought. The road is narrowing. Relinguishing my comfort foods is not going to be enough, at least not in the short run. Melodramatic reflections at the end of the day.

I HAD A FEELING
No wonder I feel ounces rather than pounds smaller. All my favorite, daily edibles are, according to WW, points-high. It's not enough to have given up sweets and Diet Coke. It's not enough to be using my 1-cup measuring cups diligently. It's not enough to drink water throughout the day. Now I'm supposed to get out the 1/2 measuring cup too, and maybe even the 1/4 measuring cup. This is what I've always loathed about weight-loss dieting: starvation. All the more incentive to move into cardio exercise. The inner resistance is high. My body really doesn't want me pushing it. So I have to go about it in a balanced, patient, enlightened way. I do miss hiking, but can't say I miss my home exercise bike, as great as it is. THANK YOU, KIM, FOR ALL THIS GREAT DETAIL. I NEEDED IT.

Oh sister Kim you know me too well. I am trying. Belly fat and boob fat withstanding. Only you could have taught me about the dreaded back fat. I look forward to those walks. I am trying mindful eating. But, on a plus note, I have been sleeping in somewhat. And, i suck in my stomach right up the center whenever i think of it. i don't know if I was doing that before. Thanks for the support. Love, you guys. Have a happy 4th. Going to try to get a bbq together here tommorrow then go to our beach for fireworks with Kyle. Robert and Bob have to work :(.
SLOW AND STEADY WINS THE RACE
Still are target girls. Down 1.6lbs for a total of 10.8. Now you wonder why I feel so light. WW is advising me slow and steady wins the race. We all must keep that in mind.

Q TO KIM
I'm curious about the points WW assigns to some of my favorite things. When, and if, you get a few minutes, would you look these up for me in your Points Book? No rush. I know you're uber-busy.

ONE-MONTH REVIEW
I've made the following changes in the last 30 days:
My self-care goals:
I've made the following changes in the last 30 days:
- Drinking 5 to 7 8-oz glasses of good drinking water a day & eliminating bottled water
- Drinking green tea daily
- Drinking no Diet Coke
- Eating no sweets
- Eating no white flour products
- Eating no dairy--with two exceptions: grated parmesan cheese on pasta and the dairy-related ingredients in my protein drinks
- Using my 1-cup measuring cups to serve myself what I would call "main dishes," e.g., wild rice & cranberries, indian-spiced quinoa, vegetarian stew, pasta...
- Cutting up salad ingredients as soon as I get home from the store, e.g, peppers, carrots, cucumbers...
- Cutting up large fruit like pineapple and melon almost as soon as I get home from the store
- Regular yoga
My goals for July, i.e., now:
- Continue with June's changes
- Begin cardio exercise
My other self-care habits, relatively new over the past year:
- Washing my face nightly before I go to bed, followed by either a moisturizer or exfoliating cream or both; preferably using a moisturizer that contains antioxidants and other anti-aging ingredients
- Applying foot cream nightly
- Applying hand cream nightly
- Wearing sunscreen, no less than 30 SFP broad-spectrum daily, whether or not I'm going outside; preferably a sunscreen that also contains antioxidants and other anti-aging ingredients
- Exfoliating my face at least every other day
- Exfoliating my body and feet at least once a month
- Applying facial masks--a cleansing mask or moisturing mask--at least once a week, often at the same time I apply a moisturing or reparative mask to my hair after shampooing
My self-care goals:
- Continue with all of the above
- Purchase Retin A online & use it nightly thereafter
- Investigate and purchase a new anti-aging facial serum
- Make all-over body moisturing a priority after I shower
- Eliminate all laureth/laurel sulfate shampoos and other hair products; investigate alternatives
- Install new chlorine filter shower head
- Whiten my teeth once a month
Q: Have I lost weight?
A: A bit.
COMMENT TO KIM
I feel like you're in a sleek Mercedes SL convertible driving on the autobahn wearing expensive Italian sunglasses and I'm in a worn-out horse-and-buggy bumping along a dusty country road and wearing a battered straw hat.
The miracle is: I'm not envious! I'm happy for you!
Down a dress size! Oh, yeah.....

FEELING GOOD
Good morning. I feel so good, you would think I weighed 120 lbs. My clothes fit and I've bought a ton of clothes in the next size down. My plan is to try all my smaller clothes on Sunday's to see what fits.
I went to a grad party on Sunday with the same attitude I have today. Feeling good and thinking I am 120lbs and dressed as I felt. Saw the pictures and I don't know what was worse. Memorial Day or them.
Today is weigh in day and I expect to drop and look forward to the results and will share later on.
Hope everyone has a fun plan for the 4th. Hayley and I are going to the beach early (8AM) and I plan to walk for the 1st hour and enjoy every moment thereafter.
Dearest Leslie -- It's time to get on the program and catch on. Start taking care of yourself. You have the least amount to lose and with some focus you can turn it around and lose your belly and boob fat. I know you can do it. I plan to be in good enough shape when I see you and we will be walking that bridge together. Can't wait!!!!

GOODBYE, FIJI WATER
My ZeroWater water doesn't taste as good as Fiji Water, which I've been drinking for quite a while. And I knew it wouldn't No water tastes as good as Fiji Water or has its softness. But I'm having my 5th glass of ZeroWater as I write and it's absolutely fine. As I said a few days ago, it feels very good to have finally taken a stand against bottled water. The problem with bottled water isn't just the plastics, billions of bottles that end up in dumpsites. It's also the environmental cost of the bottling process itself and the trucks necessary for transport.
And then there are the special social and environmental costs unique to Fiji Water, which does indeed come from Fiji. I've been avoiding facing the rumors I'd heard in past years about the people of Fiji not having access to clean drinking water
--1/3 of the island's population. A BBC investigation discovered that the Fiji capital of Suva has an undependable water system with failing infrastructure.
Meanwhile, a husband and wife team who live here in LA, the Resnick's, own the Fiji Water company and are responsible for exporting as much as 137 million quarts of water from Fiji in a single year. (Mrs. Resnick is the person who came up with the idea of "POM," and has made a fortune on pomegranate juice.)The Los Angeles Business Journal has estimated the couple’s net worth at $1.4 billion (2009).
I'm probably the only one in the family who's been attached to Fiji Water. But if you want to read more, you'll find below the article I avoided reading for several years.

The True Price of Fiji Water
Today, about one-third of Fiji's people lack access to clean drinking water, leading to incidents of typhoid and other water-related diseases. The small island nation of Fiji with its population of about 150,000 -- is now controlled by a military regime that took control via the 2006 Fijian coup d'etat. With such an unstable government -- people suffer while some industries prosper. One of these prospering companies is Fiji Water. Water imported into the US from the small island nation of Fiji is ranked number 2 in bottled waters. France, of course, is number 1.
The irony of these statistics is that Fiji Water exported about 130 million liters of Fiji water in the past year. To present a "green face" to the world -- Fiji Water returns a token amount of money to bring clean water to certain areas of Fiji. However, according to a recent BBC investigation, the Fiji capital of Suva has an undependable water system with failing infrastructure.
And, let's not overlook the "transnational" power Fiji Water wields over the relatively powerless rulers of Fiji.
In early July of 2008, the Fijian government proposed a tax on bottled water in order to generate income and to help improve and conserve the island's water resources. In a span of a couple of weeks -- the government had to abort the bottled water tax because of overt economic threats by the bottled water lobby.
The threats occurred when bottling companies shut down factories -- stating that they would not operate under such a tax. This bottled water protest would have cost Fiji up to $3 million in lost export revenues a week. With such a big gun to their heads -- the Fijian government quickly dropped their proposed tax.
However, there is one vital aspect of this Fijian water debacle that rarely receives mention. And, that is the long-term environmental consequence of taking precious water and putting it inside plastic bottles.
Freshwater on volcanic islands is rare due to the porous soils and rocks that make up such islands. Therefore, any freshwater that is found on a volcanic island is valuable because it supports tropical ecosystems and usually flows out into the ocean rather quickly. Freshwater is the most precious liquid on Earth. Through the alchemical miracle of our hydrologic cycle -- freshwater is naturally manufactured by nature and temporarily stored on land. And, only a small fraction of freshwater, about one-hundredth of one-percent, is readily available for human use.
The key to the success and sustenance of all life is the energetic flow of water through our biosphere. When precious freshwater flows from land and mixes with our world's saltwater -- there is a magical explosion of life along the so-called "coastal zone." This explosion of coastal life is vital to the foundation of the food chain for our oceans.
When we pump freshwater from any volcanic island, such as we find in Fiji -- we remove a vital life-giving force from that region of our global ocean. In fact, Fiji Water brags about how remote the Fijian Islands are -- and thus capitalizes on the purity of Fiji water. However, this remoteness is what makes Fijian freshwater all the more valuable to the local people, their tropical ecosystems, and the oceanic ecosystems that have evolved in that region over millions of years.
Therefore, each time we see a bottle of Fiji Water -- let's consider the true price of that bottle to our living world of today and of the future. Hopefully, we will see the price that reaches far beyond the money in our pockets.
